Soul singer Brian Owens has just released an album called Soul Of Cash, wherein he joins the long list of musicians who’ve covered the songs of the late Johnny Cash. But Owens’ project is different: he makes a case that these songs are a form of soul music. What we have in common, Owens says, far outweighs the difference that I'm black and he's white. Owens points out that country music has its roots in the blues and in the church, just like soul music.

Brian Owens is a St. Louis-born soul singer who is joined by his band the Deacons of Soul on the album Soul of Ferguson, named for the suburb where he was born and raised. Owens toured as an opening act for Michael McDonald, a fellow native of Ferguson, and invited the former Doobie Brother to join him on "For You," the album's lead single. Owens had been singing the Motown-inspired tune during a soundcheck when it caught McDonald's interest, prompting him to turn it into a duet. He killed it," Owens said in a 2017 Songfacts interview
Owens wrote eight of Soul of Ferguson’s nine tracks, with the Deacons of Soul band members writing Benediction, a soulful track drenched in the sanctified blues and harmonic moans and hums of the black church. Owens and McDonald pair up on For You, a rousing number that – like many of the best tunes in the soul music canon – totally obliterate the line between sacred and worldly. Owens and McDonald never say Jesus or girl or baby. But then you hear Owens and McDonald, these two sons of Ferguson – one black and one white – working it out and you realized that music – especially good music – always retains the power to surmount, at least for those few magical moments, the barriers humans often erect.
Ferguson, MO-raised singer-songwriter Brian Owens keeps the spirit of soul alive. Owens wrote all eight of the songs featured on the album, drawing from each one from his many influences - Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield and other giants. One listen to So High and you’ll hear the influence of those classic soul crooners. The song’s content is about love in two forms
Soul singer Brian Owens is decidedly old-school when it comes to his musical aesthetics, and that’s no truer than with his latest album, Soul of Ferguson, out Friday. I formatted it like an old LP, Owens says. The album includes his single "For You" with legendary singer Michael McDonald.
