Album · 2014 · 14 Songs.

Hendra is the second studio album released by the English singer, author and t Ben Watt on April 15, 2014 through Unmade Road, under exclusive license to Caroline International. The record is a collaboration with Bernard Butler and features a guest-appearance by David Gilmour on slide guitar and backing vocals on "The Levels". This is Watt's first solo album for three-decades since his 1983's debut, North Marine Drive. All tracks written by Ben Watt.

The delightful Hendra, Watt’s unexpected, just-released new album, further delivers on the promise offered by Watt’s earliest works. But then a career happened

Watt’s guitar-playing – rich folk-jazz voicings and propulsive echo-delay – set him apart from many of his contemporaries. His early work culminated in his sparse atmospheric debut album North Marine Drive (1983, UK Independent Album Chart, No 9) and featured solos from British alto sax giant, Peter King. Everything But The Girl (1983 - 2000). In the summer of 1983 he put solo plans on hold to perform and write full-time with Tracey Thorn in their recently-formed duo Everything But The Girl.

EBTG have received eight gold, and one platinum album BPI Certifications in the UK, and one gold album RIAA Certification in the US. The song "

If all you knew of Tracey Thorn was her music, you might think she had spent the last 30 years being squeezed through the emotional wringer. Her voice is an instrument of exquisite dolour, and her acutely observed songs dwell on relationships in their terminal phase, or in the scorched aftermath. Following Watt's full recovery, the duo took a new electronic direction. Massive Attack asked Thorn to guest on their Protection album, while New York DJ Todd Terry turned Missing from a wee-hours ballad into a global dancefloor smash. Walking Wounded, a masterpiece of dance-savvy melancholia, became their biggest-selling album, leading to Watt's current career as a DJ, promoter and label boss. The dancefloor never lies; there's a meritocracy. I love the dance scene for those qualities.

Ben Watt, whether he realized it at the time or not, did just that with a song he wrote and sang for his duo Everything But The Girl in 1988. Titled "The Night I Heard Caruso Sing," this tender ballad encapsulated what it meant to be a young, family-ready male during the troubling Cold War. "I've thought of having children, but I've gone and changed my mind," he admits at the start. Dan MacIntosh (Songfacts): Your Hendra album comes over 30 years after your 1983 solo debut (North Marine Drive). Why the long wait? Ben Watt: Strangely (he says, trying not to adopt too ironic a voice), I was in another band that took up quite a lot of my time - twenty years in fact. And then I decided to be a DJ and run a record label that took another ten. Does that answer it for you? Songfacts: You call Hendra "simply a folk-rock record in an electronic ag. What caused you to go for more simplicity?

The album won the 'Best 'Difficult' Second Album' category at the AIM Independent Music Awards 2014. It was included at No 27 in Uncut's Top 75 Albums of 2014. Rolling Stone (Germany) made it their No 2 best album of 2014 April 2016 saw the release of his third solo album Fever Dream.
