Carmen McRae - The Great American Songbook FLAC album

100 (100 Original Tracks Remastered). Jazz Café Presents: Carmen McRae (Live). The Sound of Silence.

Carmen McRae sings Easy Living, Days of Wine and Roses and It's Impossible on her live album The Great American Songbook.

The Great American Songbook is a 1972 live album by Carmen McRae, accompanied by a jazz quartet including Jimmy Rowles and Joe Pass. McRae was a great fan of Rowles and described him in the liner notes to the album as "the guy every girl singer in her right mind would like to work with". Rowles's humorous country and western song, "The Ballad of Thelonious Monk", is featured on the album.

On this popular two-LP set, singer Carmen McRae interprets songs by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Michel Legrand, Warren & Dubin, Henry Mancini, and Jimmy Van Heusen, among others, but it is her rendition of a humorous Jimmy Rowles novelty ("The Ballad of Thelonious Monk") that is best remembered. Joined by pianist Rowles, guitarist Joe Pass, bassist Chuck Domanico, and drummer Chuck Flores, McRae had what was at the time a rare opportunity to record a live, spontaneous, jazz-oriented set.

The Great American Songbook. Exclusive Prime pricing. Carmen McRae was unique and unparalleled, Diana Krall cites her unambiguously and this album specifically as a major influence in her style and approach (one listen and you will see why). In the 50's and early 60's it was standard fare for jazz combos to draw from Sammy Kahn and the "great American songbook" for their melodies on which to improvise and expound; Dave Brubeck and others made this a standard motif in their work. Carmen is often remembered as the perfect duet partner for Sammy Davis Jr, but her solo outings were most often treasures in the jazz genre. Rowles's humorous country and western song, "The Ballad of Thelonious Monk" is featured on the album.
