Bill Evans and Jazz Piano Since 1945. Bill Evans, with alter ego Bud Powell, defined the art of jazz pianism as performed today. From the loam of Bill Evans emerged pianists Alan Broadbent, Lynne Arriale, Jessica Williams, James Williams, Fred Hersch, and on and on and on. Evans' shadow is a long one, stretching well beyond his relatively short life. While these box sets represent important jazz documents, they, more than likely, cannot approach the importance of what was recorded that warm early Spring Sunday afternoon by three young men elevating the art of the jazz piano trio from cocktail music to classical chamber fair.

The following is a listing of the jazz pianist Bill Evans' original albums. He recorded over 50 albums as a leader between 1956 and 1980 and also played as a sideman on nearly as many more. He broke new ground in many of his piano trio, duet and solo recordings. Several of those won or were nominated for Grammy Awards. Jerry Wald and his Orchestra (1953). Listen to the Music of Jerry Wald (1955). The Singing Reed (1955). A Message from Garcia (1955).
Sunday at the Village Vanguard is the initial volume of a mammoth recording session by the Bill Evans Trio, from June 25, 1961 at New York's Village Vanguard documenting Evans' first trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian. Its companion volume is Waltz for Debby. The shapshifting reading of Miles Davis' "Solar," is a place where angularity, counterpoint, and early modalism all come together in a knotty and insistent, yet utterly seamless blend of post-bop aesthetics and expanded harmonic intercourse with Motian, whose work, while indispensable in the balance of the trio, comes more into play here, and is more assertive with his half-time accents to.
Jazz pianist Bill Evans began a quiet revolution in the early 1960s. Evans envisioned a trio where all three musicians were on an equal footing, where they'd truly interact. Evans absorbed the bebop approach to the keys but also took inspiration from the suave pianism of Nat "King" Cole and 20th-century classical Impressionism. Read full description. Evans reverted to the trio format for his last album on Riverside (soon after which the label went bankrupt), a live date, At Shelly's Manne-Hole (the name of drummer Shelly Manne's jazz club in Hollywood), with Israels on bass and Motian replaced by Larry Bunker. It's a moving, melancholic session, but it lacks the combustive energy of the earlier trios. Everybody Digs Bill Evans and Portrait in Jazz are more open and dynamic, though imaging is vague, the result either of channel-bleeding or the notion-common in early stereo recordings-that each and every instrument should be split or spread across the soundstage. Then again, the Analogue Productions' 45rpm QRP of Sunday at the Village Vanguard, which seems to have been recorded with the same set-up, combines the best of both Waltz for Debbys-the lush ambience of the QRP 45 and the brash percussiveness of the Doug Sax 33.
