Absinthe is the final recording from the band Naked City. Unlike the band's other genre-mixing releases, the music on Absinthe is consistently in an ambient and noise style. The titles of many of its tracks refer to the works of Paul Verlaine, Charles Baudelaire and other figures in the fin de siècle Decadent movement, and to the drink after which the album is named. The album's cover and liner notes feature photographs by the German Surrealist Hans Bellmer.

Radio is the fourth studio album by the band Naked City, and their first to be composed entirely by bandleader John Zorn. The album was also released as part of Naked City: The Complete Studio Recordings on Tzadik Records in 2005. Radio marked a return to the eclectic, "jump cut" style of the band's 1989 debut album. The liner notes cite a wide range of musical influences including Charles Mingus, Little Feat, Ruins, Booker T. & the .

While Absinthe may terrify any happy-go-lucky ditzy person who always see life as Sesame Street, I really don't find this album to be scary at all. This, is dark ambient. The band uses interesting instumentation, and this is Naked City's most consist and unique. While I'm not wrapped in beautiful darkness, I find it interesting that it's the same band that made the other albums. Basically, this album revels in darkness, and it soothes me, among other things. Some people often wonder how people do not get scared of things like this, and the truth for me, is simple.

Naked City - Absinthe (1993). Next video playing soon.
Naked City grew out of an eclectic downtown Manhattan music scene in the late ’80s that coalesced around the original Knitting Factory. Punks went to see jazz combos; jazz musicians joined punk bands. The band’s second album, Torture Garden, ditched the gangster-soundtrack angle entirely and just crammed 42 hardcore miniatures onto a single disc (including a few repurposed pieces from their debut). The shortest, Hammerhead, was just eight seconds long. After 1993’s moodier, more ambient Absinthe, Naked City broke up and John Zorn went on to other, only slightly less nutty projects like his klezmer-inspired group Masada and the Moonchild Trio, his long-running collaboration with Joey Baron, Mike Patton and Mr. Bungle bassist Trevor Dunn. But for awhile there, Naked City was truly, in the eyes of many, the Weirdest Band in the World.
