My Aim Is True is the RIAA Platinum-certified debut album by English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello. The album was recorded at Pathway Studios in Highbury, London Borough of Islington, over the course of 1976 six four-hour studio sessions, in a total of approximately twenty-four hours. It was the first of five consecutive Costello albums produced by Nick Lowe and cost £2,000 to record

On My Aim Is True, Elvis' raw energy comes through in a way that's never completely recaptured on later records. While the songs range from mellow country twang to full-on, spitting assault, there's a strange cohesiveness to the album simply by virtue of its rough, rushed feel. Although it's a studio album, there's a latent energy to Nick Lowe's production that grants My Aim Is True all the immediacy of a live show. While Lowe's blunt production certainly enhances the record, the real star here, naturally, is Elvis himself

Elvis Costello’s debut album brought home to me just how timid Little Criminals really is. Costello’s best songs are anything but timid, but they’re as intelligent as some of Newman’s finest, as endearingly elusive in their meanings, and funny in the same bitter, self-deprecating manner. They are also, like Newman’s signature songs, very weird. Costello, a twenty-two-year-old ex-computer operator who grew up in Liverpool and now looks like an underfed, misanthropic Buddy Holly, is proof that not only are things quite strange in England today, they are capable of getting a lot stranger. My Aim Is True (the title is a line from Alison ) is in the Top Twenty in Britain; it is likely to go higher, as Costello recently managed to get himself busted for taking his electric guitar into the streets. The LP is already getting airplay on American FM stations, and a tour of sorts is set for late fall.

His aim is still true after all these years. For an era obsessed with authenticity, Elvis Costello was about as fabricated as they came. A made-up name, a lot of lo-fi hype (remember all the Stiff slogans and his arrest outside the CBS London convention?) and those Clark Kent glasses, he always looked like a ringer in rock’s perpetual race to find the real deal

In honor of the 40th anniversary of English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello’s debut, My Aim Is True, we’re ranking the tracks on this July 22, 1977 debut that turned out to be one of the most influential albums in the history of rock and punk. Costello wastes no time laying on the snide in the opening statement of his debut album. Now that your picture's in the paper being rhythmically admired, he sings. Working is certainly overrated.

My Aim Is True was recorded at Pathway Studios, Islington in a total of 24 hours' studio time and at a cost of £2000. As I still had my 'day-job,' these sessions had to take place on 'sick days' and holidays during late 1976 and early 1977.

Both "Radio Sweetheart" and "Stranger In The House" two of only three "out-takes" from My Aim Is True (the other, a version of "Living in Paradise", is also lost).

Track 16 features the band Flip City.
