Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is the debut album by the band of the same name, released on November 9, 1976 by Shelter Records. The album was recorded and mixed at the Shelter Studio in Hollywood, California. Initially following its release, the album received little attention in the United States.

Unfortunately, Petty had a dry spell on Long After Dark. With its swirling, minor key guitars, "You Got Lucky" is a classic and "Change of Heart" comes close to matching those peaks, but the remaining songs rarely rise above agreeable filler. Since the Heartbreakers are a very good band, it means the record sounds pretty good as it's playing, but apart from those few highlights, nothing much is memorable once the album has finished. And coming on the heels of two excellent records, that's quite a disappointment.

Long After Dark is one of Tom Petty’s underrated classics. Coming after the mega-successes Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises, Long After Dark likely suffered for being more of a very good thing. The single You Got Lucky added an ‘80s synth common to all of the era's mainstream rock bands, while songs such as Deliver Me, Change of Heart, and Finding Out relied on the usual snarling guitars, howling organs, and locked-in-tight bass and drums. The album is best known for introducing the late Howie Epstein on bass and harmony vocals. Epstein’s harmonies would give The Heartbreakers a stronger vocal presence in concert. In retrospect, Long After Dark ranks among the best albums by Petty and The Heartbreakers.

On September 21, 2006, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers received the keys to the city of Gainesville, Florida, where he and his bandmates either lived or grew up. Petty quipped, when questioned about the key he received from Gainesville's mayor, "It's a lot nicer than the one we got in Chicago.
