First Rays of the New Rising Sun is a compilation album by American rock musician Jimi Hendrix, featuring songs mostly intended for his planned fourth studio album. The 17-track album was one of the first releases overseen by Experience Hendrix, a family company that took over management of his recording legacy. MCA Records released the album in 1997 and it reached the album charts in the United States, United Kingdom, and four other countries.

And speaking of the guitar, despite the prominence of Hendrix's vocals on a lot of this album, the guitar playing is pretty much up to the standard that one would expect, if not necessarily the final versions of some of the songs. Most of the material on First Rays of the New Rising Sun surfaced among the various posthumous Hendrix LPs issued from the 1970s through the early 1990s, but a lot of it was tampered with, mostly in the form of posthumous overdubbed embellishments supervised by producer Alan Douglas - all of that has been stripped off and the multi-track.
Jimi Hendrix & The Cry of Love – First Rays of the New Rising Sun November 2014 UPGRADE. Side A: 1. Dolly Dagger 2. Night Bird Flying 3. Room Full of Mirrors 4. Belly Button Window 5. Freedom. Instead of assembling the album as Hendrix had envisioned, the material was dashed together by producer Alan Douglas and released on a number of posthumous albums, including The Cry of Love, Rainbow Bridge, War Heroes, Loose Ends and Voodoo Soup. After securing the legal rights to his catalog, a separate attempt was made by The Hendrix Estate in 1997 to re-issue a compilation meant to replicate Hendrix’s wishes for First Rays, but many fans noted that poor song selection and mastering missed the mark as well.

The unfinished 1968-70 sessions for Jimi Hendrix’s fourth album left a wealth of potential material for compilers to sift through, a lot of which shows the influence of contemporary developments in funk and soul. Freedom is Sly Stone rock and Dolly Dagger cocks an ear to Curtis Mayfield, while Night Bird Flying has the swagger of the (newly funky) Stones with a Beatles-y Lady Madonna bassline. The sumptuous Angel is a sweet and thoughtful ballad, tinged with pathos and yearning. First Rays of the New Rising Sun Jimi Hendrix.
this album for me has all the hallmarks of the genius that hendrix was, at his absolute best. the shift away in the main from his traditional blues roots to a more progressive and experimental phase shown in the electric ladyland album is expanded further here. many of the tracks, which were originally rush released after jimis death onto vinyl in the form. of the album rainbow bridge, and later, cry of love, are here. For me, just about to break into my early teens as these albums became popular, they revolutionised my musical taste and thinking.
