Having completed his work on Bowie's Pinups, Ronson entered the first months of 1974 under the guidance of Tony De Fries and the MainMan promotional organization. With a contract from RCA in hand, Ronson had retired to the Chateau D'Herouville in the North of France where he recorded his first solo album, Slaughter On 10th Avenue (Pinups had been recorded here just weeks earlier). Slaughter" was planned to be a concept album in the vein of The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.
Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is a ballet with music by Richard Rodgers and choreography by George Balanchine. It occurs near the end of Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical comedy On Your Toes. Slaughter is the story of a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot and killed by her jealous boyfriend. The hoofer then shoots the boyfriend.
Slaughter on 10th Avenue is the debut album by Mick Ronson, released in 1974. For inspiration, Ronson relied on Annette Peacock's 1972 album I'm the One; he used the title track and her arrangement of Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender". Two songs were co-written by Ronson with Scott Richardson. Richardson had been brought into the Bowie camp by Angie Bowie who met him through Ron Asheton of The Stooges. Richardson had been involved with the Ann Arbor music scene since the mid-60s and he came to prominence with the band, The SRC (The Scot Richard Case).
Album · 1974 · 11 Songs. Named after the 1957 Arnold Laven film, Mick Ronson’s 1974 solo debut was recorded and released following his work on five David Bowie albums. So hearing some Bowie influence seep out of Ronson’s vocal cords is understandable, even in the opening version of Elvis Presley’s Love Me Tender. Bowie cowrote the glam-touched Growing Up and I'm Fine, where Ronson’s prowess as a '70s guitar deity is more pronounced.

Slaughter on 10th Avenue. Reflecting, a decade after the fact, on his launch as a solo rock & roll superstar, Mick Ronson shrugged indifferently, as though he'd really had no say in the matter. David Bowie had just "retired" and, in the absence of the singing sensation with whom Ronson had already risen to unexpected heights, manager Tony DeFries was anxious to keep at least one of his many pots boiling . The same can be said for the accompanying album. Slaughter on 10th Avenue remains a startling achievement, however it is viewed. Guitar gods, after all, were ten-a-penny through the '70s. But could Ritchie Blackmore sing?
